Google trials its own AI chatbot Bard after success of ChatGPT Google

This cutting-edge AI technology aims to revolutionize the information-gathering process and how we use search engines. Since then we’ve continued to make investments in AI across the board, and Google AI and DeepMind are advancing the state of the art. Today, the scale of the largest AI computations is doubling every six months, far outpacing Moore’s Law.

Google’s stock tumbled when the company released an official demo video that showed Bard making a factual error. So it’s not surprising that even when Google began rolling out access to Bard, the company added a heavy dose of disclaimers. Google also said its latest AI technologies – such as LaMDA, PaLM, image generator Imagen and music creator MusicLM – would be integrated into its search engine. Pichai said new AI-powered features in its search engine would distill complex information and multiple perspectives into “easy-to-digest” formats. Large language AI models such as LaMDA and the one behind ChatGPT are types of neural networks, which mimic the underlying architecture of the brain in computer form.

How Is Google Bard Different from ChatGPT?

The researchers who created LaMDA state that approaches like increasing the size of the model can help it gain more factual information. In an internal meeting at Google (reported by CNBC), employees questioned the use of Bard in search. “We find that crowd-annotated data is an effective tool for driving significant additional gains. Forty-seven days after the code red strategy adjustment, Google announced the launch of Bard on February 6, 2023.

Bard will be released to specialist product testers on Monday and will then be made more widely available to the public in the coming weeks, Google said. Like ChatGPT, Bard is powered by a so-called large language model – in Google’s case called LaMDA. Like all large language models (LLMs), Google Bard isn’t perfect and may have problems. In a post on X about the new language model, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said, “Introducing Gemini 1.0, our most capable and general AI model yet. Built natively to be multimodal, it’s the first step in our Gemini-era of models. If your service requires engaging human-like conversations, then ChatGPT could serve you the best.

Does Google Bard Save Data?

The example presented by Pichai on Monday was a conversational, chatbot-like response to a question about whether it is easier to learn the guitar or the piano. It appeared at the top of the search query instead of, for instance, a link to a blogpost or a website. Again, Google has not released this AI-powered search model to the public so questions remain.

It relies on generative AI technology, which means it can create brand new text that has never existed before. Other Bard features that Reddit users asked for were a standalone app, a persistent memory to help with longer tasks, and less censorship of its answers. ChatGPT and Claude both demonstrate strong creative writing abilities for generating narratives, articles, and other content. Claude aims to produce more imaginative and engaging content through its training. However, Claude 2 was the model that was able to bypass most AI detection softwares(premium and free).

It is not yet known if the chatbot will be available through other Google products such as Google Assistant or Google Maps. After a Google employee believed LaMDA was conscious, the AI became a topic of discussion due to the impression it gave off in its answers. In addition, the engineer hypothesized that LaMDA, like humans, expresses its anxieties through communication. Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai introduced the Google Bard AI chatbot in a blog post, showcasing the company’s recent priority on AI. Pichai has expressed his enthusiasm for adapting cutting-edge AI research and development to real-world problems.

We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information. We’re excited for this phase of testing to help us continue to learn and improve Bard’s quality and speed. This is all because ChatGPT and AI as a whole have the potential to up-end the search engine world order. If users ask a chatbot questions away from the Google infrastructure, that’s valuable ad revenue and market share Google loses. The other difference relates to their language capabilities — Bard has given us our first taste of Google’s language models.

ChatGPT

When given a prompt, it generates a response by selecting, one word at a time, from words that are likely to come next. Picking the most probable choice every time wouldn’t lead to very creative responses, so there’s some flexibility factored in. We continue to see that the more people use them, the better LLMs get at predicting what responses might be helpful. It’s a really exciting time to be working on these technologies as we translate deep research and breakthroughs into products that truly help people.

Now, our newest AI technologies — like LaMDA, PaLM, Imagen and MusicLM — are building on this, creating entirely new ways to engage with information, from language and images to video and audio. We’re working to bring these latest AI advancements into our products, starting with Search. Microsoft was quick to steal the limelight, making sure everyone knew its CEO Satya Nadella would be making a big announcement on machine learning soon.

One great feature Bard has is «drafts.» You can tap the «View Other Drafts» drop-down to see alternative responses to the prompt, and quickly switch between them. I really like this feature as it means you essentially get three responses right away for every prompt. Beyond generating new images, Bard does currently support images in responses, including photos from Google Search and the Knowledge Graph. After being announced, Google Bard remained open to a limited amount of users, based on a queue in a waitlist. But at Google I/O 2023, the company announced that Bard was now open to everyone, which includes 180 countries and territories around the world. Google has released its Bard chatbot to the general public and anyone with an account can now use it.

How will Google and Microsoft AI chatbots affect us and how we work?

One critical concern is its susceptibility to producing incorrect or misleading information. While it has been trained on massive datasets, there may still be inaccuracies or outdated knowledge in its responses, leading to potentially misleading or unreliable answers. Additionally, there is a risk of the model “making things up” when it encounters questions or topics outside the scope of its training data, leading to unreliable responses.
